In 1998, there were an estimated 6,334,000 police reported crashes, in which 41,471 people were killed and 3,192,000 people were injured.

An average of 114 persons died each day in motor vehicle crashes in 1998 - one every 13 minutes.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for every age from 5 through 29 years old.

Vehicle occupants accounted for 85.3 percent of traffic fatalities in 1998.  The remaining 14.7 percent were pedestrians, pedal cyclists, and other nonoccupants.
